Build a TrebuchetLearning to build a trebuchet can be a great learning experience and you can have a lot of fun with it as well. When you build a trebuchet you can build a big one like the ancient Chinese invented or you can save a lot of hard work and money and build a scaled down version to have some fun with. You can build a trebuchet at home with some bass wood, which is cheap at your neighborhood hobby shop. You will also need a good set of plans to help you build a trebuchet. The base can be constructed using a quarter of an inch square bass wood. The base should be twelve by six inches when constructed. You want your trebuchet to stand firmly when it is being launched. Next you need to make vertical beams and they should be twelve inches in length and connected to the base. Since these posts will support all of the weight of the arm and the counter weight you will want to make them fairly thick. You can add some diagonal beams as well to help support these vertical beams. The next step to build a trebuchet is to build the arm and launch trough. The arm is made of 3 pieces of half inch by half inch bass wood. There should be about twelve inches of the arm extending alone and forming the long end of the arm. Eight inches of the arm should be made of pieces of this wood and they need to have holes drilled for a pivot axle and a counter-weight arm axle. The launch trough is next and this projects the object when you fire. For this you can glue four pieces of half inch by half inch wood together. Now you need to attach a weight, around nine pounds and also the pouch that will hold your projectile. The rest is just following your plans to finish attaching everything and then you should be all set to start experimenting with launching. |
